Overview

At the Frozen Section Conference, slides made during intraoperative consultation are reviewed by the whole group of attendee pathologists, along with the clinical information known at that time.  This is followed by immediate comparison to permanent sections of the slides, additional slides or stains from the case (if pertinent), the ultimate final diagnosis, and outcome information.  This provides increased experience with common diagnoses, increased knowledge of the common necessary or desired elements of intraoperative diagnosis (desired by surgeons at our medical center), increased exposure to difficult or uncommon diagnoses, and increased experience with technical artifacts or confounding factors and how to handle such challenges both by consensus diagnosis and discussion and also with follow up review of the literature or other published standards.

Objectives
  1. Interpret a timely and accurate diagnosis from intraoperative frozen section slides.
  2. Apply best practices from current medical literature and institutional practices suited best for patient intraoperative management.
  3. Discuss current practices within the department, including knowledge of new surgical practices or intraoperative needs.
