Overview
The speciality of hip preservation surgery has rapidly evolved over the past decade. This has been due to an improved understanding of structural hip disease and the development of new surgical techniques.  New diagnostic strategies for diagnosing pre-arthritic hip disease have also been developed. Surgical techniques including periacetabular osteotomy, surgical dislocation hip, hip arthroscopy, and combination of the above procedures have been introduced over the past 10 years and have become popularized over the past five years. This recent advance in the subspeciality area of hip preservation surgery has led to insufficient education opportunities for surgeons interested in these areas. Therefore this course has been developed to introduce contemporary ideas regarding diagnosis and surgical treatment of pre-arthritic hip disease. Special emphasis will be placed on evolving surgical techniques of hip arthroscopy and open hip impingement procedures.

Objectives
  1. 1) Discuss patient evaluation and diagnostic skills for pre-arthritic and early arthritic hip disease.
  2. 2) Develop an improved knowledge regarding the most common pre-arthritic hip disorders (femoroacetabular impingement and hip dysplasia)
  3. 3) Describe and evaluate the appropriate indications for arthroscopic and open procedures in the treatment of pre-arthritic hip disease.
  4. 4) Under the guidance of expert faculty, identify the surgical anatomy for, and perform the various surgical techniques (hip arthroscopy, surgical dislocation, periacetabular osteotomy and proximal femoral osteotomy) for the treatment of pre-arthritic hip disorders.
