Risks, Treatments and Outcomes of Cerebral Venous Sinus Thrombosis
12:35PM - 1:05PM
Diana Greene-Chandos, MD

In the is talk we will examine the typical and atypical present symptoms of a cerebral venous sinus thrombosis (CVST). The major risk factors for each age group will be discussed and prevention strategies. We will also examine the standard of care treatment options as well as what to do next when standard therapy is not working. We will also go over sequelae of venous infarctions such as ICH, SAH, seizures, cerebral edema and brain shift or herniation and how best to treat these in light of the underlying mechanism of CVST. Finally, we will describe the various outcomes in patients seen.

Objectives:
  1. Recall the presenting symptoms of cerebral venous sinus thrombosis
  2. Identify the major risk factors for development of a cerebral venous sinus thrombosis.
  3. Examine the different treatment options for cerebral venous sinus thrombosis and the sequelae of venous infarctions.
  4. Describe the varied outcomes in patients with cerebral venous sinus thrombosis.

Communication and Symptom Management at the End of Life
1:05PM - 1:35PM
Lina M Toledo Franco, MD

Stroke can be devastating and unexpected, being able to communicate effectively with the patient’s loved ones to identify what is important and what are the burdens a person is able to tolerate in order to achieve goals requires knowledge, compassion, and practice. Being able to provide care that is accordant to the patient’s goals and values is fundamental. At the end of life, controlling any possible symptom that can be perceived as distress to the family should be addressed and managed. This is the last memory the family have of their loved one and it is our responsibility to provide the care needed for a peaceful death as much as
possible.

Objectives:
  1. Learn effective strategies to communicate effectively with patients/families and deliver difficult news.
  2. Understand the importance of symptom management at the end of Life.
  3. Identify symptoms at the end of life and strategies to manage them.

Objectives:
  1. Identify strategies to raise awareness about stroke risk and prevention among youth
    • Analyze the connection between birth control use and stroke risk, by highlighting personal experience.
  2. Evaluate timely intervention and medical practices in stroke care and their impact on outcomes.
  3. Share effective recovery pathways and the importance of support systems for stroke survivors.
