Friday, April 28, 2023, 8:00 AM - 4:30 PM, Il Monastero, Saint Louis University Campus, St. Louis, MO

This in-depth intensive workshop will help learners identify dementia best practices across the continuum of care, including home, long-term care communities, and hospitals. The workshop will discuss the benefits of a multidisciplinary approach to maximize functional abilities at each dementia stage. Learners will gain skills for effective communication strategies as well as a structured and organized approach to identify appropriate interventions across dementia care settings.

Sessions throughout the workshop will explore management of behavioral and psychological symptoms of dementia (BPSD) as it applies to persons living with dementia and their care partners across the continuum of care. Learners will engage with lecture, videos, problem-solving, brainstorming, and case studies. In addition to Memory Care Home Solutions clinical staff, this event will feature Dr. Lenise Cummings-Vaughn, Washington University Physician in the Division of Geriatrics and Associate Medical Director at Parc Provence on medical management of BPSD and dementia support in hospitalization and long-term care & Dr. Beth Templin, PT, DPT, GCS, a Board-Certified Clinical Specialist in Geriatric Physical Therapy and owner of HouseFit on physical function and training for dementia support. Further, a panel of persons living with dementia and care partners will share their experiences as they navigate through the complex world of dementia in different care settings.

Learners will leave with new knowledge and skillsets in identification of BPSD, strategies to support people living with dementia across the care continuum, practical skills on addressing the most difficult BPSD, preparing for transitions in the environment, and supporting care partners in ways to promote quality of life and dignity.

Objectives
  1. Identify stages of dementia according to functional needs and behavioral symptoms
  2. Evaluate the benefits of nonpharmacological, behavioral, and lifestyle changes to maximize functional abilities at each dementia stage
  3. Describe effective combinations of multi-modal helping techniques to maximize quality of life for persons with dementia and their care partners at each dementia stage
  4. Use a structured and organized approach to identify needs and appropriate resources for persons with dementia and their care partners at each dementia stage
