Overview

Saint Louis University has put together an Internet CME activity relating to diagnosis, proper testing, and treatment for whooping cough.

The target audience is practicing physicians, nurse practitioners, physicians assistants in the areas of; Pulmonary, Pediatrics, OB/GYN, Emergency Medicine, and Internal/Family Practice.



Objectives
  1. Assess the epidemiology of pertussis
  2. Recognize the clinical characteristics of the disease in adolescents and adults
  3. Be able to discuss the biology of pertussis and mechanisms of the disease
  4. Convey the complications of pertussis in infants, children and adults
  5. Conduct available diagnostic tests (PCR and culture) including sensitivity and specificity as a function of duration of illness
  6. Evaluate techniques used for obtaining samples (nasopharyngeal swabbing)
  7. Prioritize treatment of diagnosed cases and management of individual contacts
  8. Implement recommendations for vaccination with Tdap from the CDC recommendations for adolescents and adults

This activity is being hosted by the Saint Louis University Heartland Center learning management system. You will be taken to their site where you will register, pay the $15.00 fee, view the activity, complete the exam, the evaluation, and download or print your certificate.

Credit Designation

Saint Louis University School of Medicine designates this Internet Enduring Material for a maximum of 1.0 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™. Physicians should only claim credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.

Saint Louis University School of Medicine will provide Other learner certificates (for NPs, PAs, nurses, and other types of learners).  The certificate will state that the activity was designated for 1.0 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™.  Follow your board's requirements for reciprocal CE credits.

The monitoring and assessment of compliance with these standards and the SLU CME Program Mission is the responsibility of the CME Program Director in consultation with the CME Program Accrediting Director & CME Chairperson, and the Continuing Education Committee. While Saint Louis University CME Program attempts to anticipate issues and assure fair treatment for all participants to conduct and experience valid and successful CME activities, there may be occasional issues which require intervention and/or action on the part of the CME Program. To register a complaint or grievance with the Saint Louis University CME Program:

Submit a written, detailed complaint or grievance to cme@slu.edu. Complaints will be reviewed by the Program Director and addressed or transferred to the appropriate level for review:

  • Answers and/or actions taken to rectify complaints will be documented and sent to those that provide contact information.
  • If appropriate, complaints will be reviewed at the CME Committee Meeting for members to discuss and find solutions to the area of complaint.
  • Compliance issues will automatically be moved up to the Accrediting Director for immediate review.
