Overview

We recognize that the scope of practice for a primary care pediatrician includes preventative care management of common medical conditions, as well as assessment of more severe conditions and referrals to specialists. For a variety of reasons, more and more responsibility for the management of childhood obesity is falling to general pediatric health care providers. We are pleased to have our experts discuss the recently updated AAP practice guidelines for childhood obesity, including treatment options such as GLP-1 Receptor Agonists.

Objectives
  1. Define and describe the epidemiology and multi-factorial causes of childhood obesity.
  2. Explain neuroendocrine and genetic causes of childhood obesity.
  3. Summarize recent updates to the AAP CPG regarding evaluation and treatment of childhood obesity.
  4. Initiate evidence-based management strategies of childhood obesity in the primary care setting.
  5. Determine when referral to endocrinology is appropriate for obesity-related complications.
