Overview

Risk-based arrangements: A path to better health care or just another layer of complexity?

Primary care teams are asked to do more than ever (coordinate care, manage chronic conditions, improve outcomes), often without the support of payment models that truly match the work. For years, risk-based contracting and value-based care have been promoted as ways to improve care quality, eliminate waste, and curb ever-rising healthcare costs. Yet for all the hype, adoption in the commercial primary care market has been slow, and opinions are divided: are these models truly viable?

On December 10th, Midwest Health Initiative’s Community Connections will bring together clinicians, health systems, payers, and purchasers to tackle the question: Is risk-based contracting a passing fad, a fantasy, or the future of primary care?

This event will feature expert presentations, an out-of-market case study on the successful implementation of commercial risk-based contracting, and an interactive discussion considering the current and future state of risk-based payment arrangements in St. Louis and the steps needed to achieve payment for better health care value.

Join us on Wednesday, December 10 for a candid exchange of perspectives as we evaluate the promise, pitfalls, and progress of risk-based payment for primary care.

Community Connections is an event series designed to strengthen shared knowledge and understanding across health care stakeholder groups and advance primary care in the St. Louis region. A common table for local practicing clinicians, health care purchasers, health plans, medical group and other community leaders, Community Connections is an opportunity to share experiences, perspectives, and ideas for strengthening primary care.

Objectives
  1. Learner will identify key barriers that have limited the adoption of risk-based payment arrangements in commercial primary care markets.
  2. Learner will compare operational characteristics and strategies from successful out-of-market case studies to the system and practice strategy toward alternative payment arrangements in the St. Louis market.
  3. Learner will formulate discussion points or questions to be raised to payers, systems, and/or purchasers that will be used to assess readiness for risk-based contracting.
  4. Learner will listen, understand, and respond to the priorities and challenges facing the different health care stakeholders in St. Louis, including clinicians, health system leaders, and health care purchasers.

Risk-Based Contracting: Fad, Fantasy, or the Future of Primary Care?

Wednesday December 10, 2025

For years, risk-based contracting and value-based care have been promised to improve primary care delivery, increase preventative care, and curb spending. Yet for the commercially insured, value-based care is lagging behind and healthcare costs continue to rise. Why is it so hard?

On December 10, Community Connections will bring together clinicians, health systems, payers, and purchasers to tackle the question:

Is risk-based contracting a passing fad, a fantasy, or the future of primary care?

Hear from local leaders at Mercy, BJC HealthCare, SSM Health, and Esse, and join us for a candid exchange of perspectives as we evaluate the promise, pitfalls, and progress of risk-based payment for primary care.
