Overview
In its 35th year, the Saint Louis University Summer Geriatric Institute is an annual continuing education event for practitioners, faculty, fellows, residents, and students who are or will provide care and services to older adults and their families. The Institute includes lectures and workshops by an interprofessional group of practitioners and researchers on new and emerging areas of geriatric medicine and services. As an extension of the Institute, a one-day training on Cognitive Stimulation Therapy (CST) will be offered. CST is a non-pharmacologic intervention for persons with mild to moderate dementia. The training fulfills the first requirement for CST Facilitator Certification.

Objectives
  1. Describe the current practice of geriatric care in the community and residential care settings in assessment and intervention.
  2. Describe through the plenary presentations, current research into assessment and intervention strategies in such areas as: dementia, nutrition, physical and behavioral health practice, legal practice issues, nutrition, long term care
  3. Describe through more in-depth workshop sessions, appropriate prevention, assessment, and intervention strategies in such areas as: exercise, suicide among older adults, meaningful activities in long term care settings, and non-pharmacological interventions for persons experiencing loneliness and social isolation.

Age-Friendly Behavioral Health Care: Implementing the 4Ms Behavioral Health Framework
8:45AM - 9:30AM
Erin Emery-Tiburcio, PhD, ABPP

The 4Ms of an Age-Friendly Health System (What Matters, Medication, Mentation, and Mobility) is an evidence-based framework for assessing and treating critical issues for older adult health. Much like the original 4Ms for hospitals and primary care, the 4Ms Behavioral Health (4M-BH) is a flexible framework for generalist clinicians with little to no geriatrics training to effectively assess and act on the unique mental health and substance use needs of older adults. The elements of the framework, key tools, and outcomes of a recent pilot test of this framework in three community mental health centers will be discussed.

Behavioral Approaches to Supporting Dementia
9:30AM - 10:15AM
Allison Gibson, PhD, MSW

Estimates suggest that roughly 90% of patients with dementia will exhibit behaviors during the course of their illness (i.e., anxiety, aggression, repetitious communication, resisting care). This presentation will discuss behavioral approaches to supporting dementia symptoms and, specifically, how modifying the environment can help to reduce these problematic dementia behaviors.

The main goal of most older adults is to be able to age successfully in place, yet the number one limitation of people over 65 is difficulty with walking and stairs, making that goal more difficult to achieve.
