Date & Location
Sunday, December 1, 2024, 12:00 AM - Sunday, November 30, 2025, 11:59 PM

Target Audience
Specialties - Advanced Practice Provider, Nursing, Pediatrics, Respiratory Therapist, Student in Training

Overview
Viral lower respiratory tract infections are amongst the most common reasons for inpatient admissions to Children's Hospitals nationwide, with a peak incidence in the late fall, winter, and spring. Evidence-based care of these patients includes largely supportive care modalities as well as multi-disciplinary care pathways to maintain optimal outcomes and appropriate healthcare utilization. As we move into "respiratory virus season", we will discuss common clinical manifestations of viral respiratory disease in children, evaluation of a patient with respiratory distress, evidence-based care for patients with croup and bronchiolitis, and review our current bronchiolitis pathway and Respiratory Severity Score, with the goal to align practice across our multi-disciplinary

Participants will explore key concepts such as cultural awareness, sensitivity, and humility while learning strategies to bridge gaps in communication and improve interpersonal relationships across cultural lines. The training includes actionable tools to enhance cultural competence and create more equitable spaces, particularly in healthcare and education.

Through this program, attendees will develop a deeper understanding of the impact of culture on identity, behavior, and expectations, ensuring they can contribute to a more inclusive and respectful environment.

Objectives
  1. Appraise the current literature and evidence, on the evaluation and treatment of viral bronchiolitis and croup in hospitalized children
  2. Demonstrate clinical indicators of severe respiratory distress in a pediatric patient
  3. Identify opportunities for de-implementation of non-indicated therapies in current practice and enhance multi-disciplinary collaboration and communication strategies to achieve these outcomes
  4. Review the Bronchiolitis Clinical Practice Guideline and Pathway and supplemental oxygen policy at SSM Health Cardinal Glennon Children's Hospital
