Overview

The audience for this program includes students and professionals working with older adults, with a special emphasis on clinicians and administrators, including physicians, nurses, psychologists, social workers,  occupational therapists, physical therapists, speech therapists,  dietitians, nursing home administrators, and those who specialize in alternative medicine. The 2018 program will include presentations on dementia, depression, communication, inter-professional practice development, nutrition, caregiver well-being and support, Cognitive Stimulation Therapy (CST), palliative and end-of-life care, exercise, and home-based care, among others.

Objectives

After attending this activity the participant will be able to:
  1. describe the current practice of geriatric care in the community setting in assessment and intervention;
  2. describe, through the plenary presentations, current research into assessment and intervention strategies in such areas as: dementia, depression, driving and mobility, caregiving, self-care, communication, workforce development, nutrition, hip fractures, dysphasia, traumatic brain injury; and cultural competency
  3. describe, through more in-depth workshop sessions, appropriate prevention, assessment, and intervention strategies in such areas as: cognitive stimulation therapy, palliative and end-of-life care, exercise and strengthening, geriatric syndromes, polypharmacy, caregiver support, complementary and alternative strategies for older adults, LGBTQ needs and services, speech therapy, Medicare Annual Visits, and new developments in nursing home care.
